Embracing the Moment: Finding Joy Even In The Chaos

Embracing the Moment: Finding Joy Even In The Chaos

As someone who has faced the challenges of breast cancer, I have come to deeply appreciate the importance of slowing down and truly enjoying the moments that life offers. Going through the process of being diagnosed, undergoing treatment, and then recovering has changed how I see the world. It has made me realize how important it is to live in the present and to find peace and joy within myself. Life can be incredibly busy and stressful, but it’s essential to take the time to notice the quietness and beauty around us. This is not only healing but also helps us to lead a more fulfilling life.

So much joy can be found in slowing down.– Emily Ley

In this journey, I have discovered that mindfulness, perspective, gratitude and the Danish concept of hygge are powerful tools that can help us embrace the present moment and find joy in everyday experiences. Mindfulness is about being fully present and aware of where we are and what we are doing. Perspective involves looking at our experiences in a new way and understanding what truly matters. Gratitude is the practice of recognizing and appreciating the good things in our lives. Hygge, a Danish word that translates to a feeling of coziness and comfort, involves creating a warm and inviting atmosphere and enjoying the simple pleasures in life. These practices have helped me navigate through tough times and have brought more peace and happiness into my life.

I want to share some simple and practical tips that have helped me along the way. These tips can help anyone, whether you are a breast cancer survivor or simply someone looking to live a more mindful, grateful and cozy life. By incorporating these practices into your daily routine, you can learn to slow down, enjoy the moment, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds you.

Mindfulness: Anchoring Yourself in the Present

Mindfulness involves being fully present and engaged in the current moment, without judgment. It’s about noticing the little things and appreciating them for what they are.

  • Practice Deep Breathing: Whenever you feel overwhelmed or distracted, take a few deep breaths. Focus on the sensation of air filling your lungs and then slowly leaving your body. This simple act can ground you in the present moment.
  • Engage Your Senses: Take a moment to engage each of your senses. Notice the colors around you, listen to the sounds, feel the textures, inhale the scents, and savor the tastes. This practice helps anchor you to the here and now.
  • Mindful Activities: Incorporate mindfulness into daily activities. Whether it’s eating a meal, walking in nature, or even washing the dishes, try to do it with full attention. Notice the details and find joy in the simplicity.
Perspective: Seeing Life Through a New Lens

Perspective is about changing how you view your experiences and the world around you. As a survivor, I’ve learned to see life through a lens of resilience and hope.

  • Embrace Change: Cancer taught me that change is a constant part of life. Instead of fearing it, I’ve learned to see change as an opportunity for growth and new beginnings.
  • Focus on What Matters: Facing a life-threatening illness puts things into perspective. I’ve learned to prioritize relationships, passions, and activities that bring true joy and fulfillment.
  • Reframe Challenges: Instead of viewing difficulties as insurmountable obstacles, I now see them as chances to learn and grow. This shift in perspective can transform challenges into meaningful experiences.
Gratitude: Cultivating a Thankful Heart

Gratitude has the power to transform how we experience life. It shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have.

  • Daily Gratitude Practice: Start or end each day by reflecting on three things you are grateful for. They can be big or small, but this practice can significantly boost your mood and overall outlook.
  • Gratitude Journal: Keeping a journal dedicated to gratitude can be incredibly rewarding. Writing down moments of thankfulness helps solidify positive memories and fosters a deeper sense of appreciation.
  • Express Gratitude: Take the time to express your gratitude to others. Whether it’s a simple thank you note, a heartfelt conversation, or an act of kindness, letting others know you appreciate them strengthens connections and spreads positivity.
Hygge: Embracing Coziness and Comfort

Hygge is about creating a warm and inviting atmosphere where you can relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

  • Create a Cozy Environment: Fill your home with soft lighting, warm blankets, and comfortable furniture. Use candles or a fireplace to create a warm and inviting glow.
  • Enjoy Simple Pleasures: Savor a hot cup of tea, enjoy a good book, or spend time with loved ones. Focus on activities that bring you comfort and joy.
  • Be Present: Hygge is about being present and fully enjoying the moment. Whether it’s a quiet evening at home or a gathering with friends, take the time to appreciate the experience.
Embracing Quietness and Beauty

One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned is to appreciate the quiet moments and the beauty that surrounds us.

  • Nature’s Healing Power: Spending time in nature has been incredibly healing. Whether it’s a walk in the park, sitting by the ocean, or simply watching the clouds, nature’s beauty provides a sense of peace and renewal.
  • Create a Peaceful Space: Designate a quiet corner in your home where you can retreat and find solace. Fill it with things that bring you peace, like books, plants, or soft music.
  • Meditation and Reflection: Set aside time each day for meditation or quiet reflection. This practice helps calm the mind, reduce stress, and enhance your appreciation for the present moment.

As a breast cancer survivor, I’ve learned that life is precious and every moment is a gift. By embracing mindfulness, shifting our perspective, and practicing gratitude, we can find joy and peace in the journey. Remember to slow down, breathe deeply, and savor the beauty that surrounds you. Life is not just about the big milestones but also about the quiet, beautiful moments in between.

With love and hygge,

Finding joy in slowing down
